A Quarter repeating Open Face Pocket Watch by Vulliamy London.
The 18 carat gold, slim case with ribbed band and engine turned, hinged back with inner cuvette signed, VULLIAMY LONDON. The gold dial with matted centre, Roman hour numerals, outer minutes divisions and offset seconds at III, having delicate, blued steel Breguet hands. The going barrell, gilt movement with very highly polished steel work throughout, cylinder escapement with flat, blued steel hairspring, gold balance and quarter repeat train operated via the pendant, sounding the hours and quarters on a single steel gong, being signed on the barrell bridge, VULLIAMY NIOM LONDON.
The Vulliamys were a three generation dynasty of superb quality clockmakers who worked in London between 1730-1854, being superceded by Joseph Jump. Their watches are of two main styles, a more typically English type of large watch with duplex escapement and this far rare style of quarter repeater.
The Breguet Influence. This watch is reminiscent of watches being made by Abraham Louis Breguet in Paris, a contemporary of the Vulliamys. His influence can be seen in the hands, the dial, the use of a ‘twist and plunge’ pendant for the repeat, the layout of the movement with cylinder escapement, the thin wheels with wide teeth and the quarter repeat system utilising only one gong. The firm of Vulliamy was taken over by Joseph Jump in 1854 who continued to make watches in a style fully worthy of the Breguet tradition.
