Case

Figured walnut case veneered onto an oak carcass with dome top surmounted by a gilt-brass foliate-tied handle, the main cross-grain top moulding set above a gallery fret with square door below rectangular side apertures with walnut frets. The moulded cross-grain base on turned brass bun feet.

Dial

The 6¼ inch square gilt-brass dial with cherub head spandrels, chapter ring engraved with Roman hours with fancy trident half hour marks and Arabic numerals within the division ring, the matted centre with engraved calendar aperture below XII.

Movement

Delicate triple fusee movement, 5½ by 7¼ inch plates, eight tulip pillars, seven latched, one pinned, split front plate, going train with knife-edge verge escapement and short bob pendulum. Hour and quarter strike trains governed by numbered countwheels to the backplate, the quarter countwheel tripping the hours via a central pivoted lever. The all-over tulip engraved backplate with line border and central reserve signed Edmund Appley Charing Cross
