A fine and small twin fusee bracket clock by this respected London maker.
The verge movement with superb tulip engraved back plate of Knibb form, incorporating verge escapement with finely turned baulster pillars, having large pierced locking plate mounted to the back plate, and with knife edge suspension, sounding the hours on a single hour bell, being signed in script, Jonathan Lownds in yPall Mall
The 6 inch square brass dial with matted centre and applied chased cherub spandrels, having ringed winding squares and finely fretted blued steel hands, with silvered engraved brass chapter ring having Roman numerals with Arabic five minute divisions, with chamfered and engraved aperture to the silvered engraved calendar ring. The main chapter signed as per the movement Jonathan Lownds in yPall Mall.
The ebony veneered case with applied Knibb style mounts having Knibb foliot tied handle, with Knibb style ‘S’ escutcheons to the glazed front door, with chased gilt brass finials and standing upon compressed gilt bun feet, hHaving glazed sides and back.
Jonathan Lowndes London. Born circa 1657, married in 1679 aged 23 of St Mary in the Fields to Grace Allen of St Giles in the Fields. Became Brother of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1680. Working from an address at The Dial in Pall Mall from 1683. Probably died around 1702.
