The John C Taylor Collection Part III

‘An Inventor’s Passion for Time’

Founded in 1947, this year Carter Marsh & Co are celebrating their 75th year in antique horology. The business is run by Darrell Dipper and Jonathan Carter, who have been fortunate to handle some of the world’s most important and seminal English clocks and watches, which continues today – and we are enormously excited and hugely privileged to be selling the most important private collection of English clocks ever to come on the market in the UK, The John C Taylor Collection.

Many of you will know of Dr Taylor and his ubiquitous kettle and motor switches – in fact, it is highly likely you are using one of his inventions daily. John’s horological passions have never been confined to a single area; innovation and quality has governed every acquisition, with many of the items needing little introduction, as their significance is both recognised and well documented.

View the Catalogue here.

Our fully illustrated 240 page printed exhibition catalogue is available on request (£35), and free online below – each exhibit can be viewed with additional images and some videos, using the ‘JCT Part IIItag above.

Part III of John’s collection has a cross section of extraordinary and interesting items, reading like a Who’s Who of English clock, watch and instrument making, and ranging from iconic examples by Ahasuerus Fromanteel, Samuel Knibb, Thomas Tompion and Richard Glynne, through to outstanding works by, amongst others Nicholas Vallin, Joseph and John Knibb, Edward East, and Daniel Quare – with prices ranging from £32,000 to £1,500,000.

We are lucky to know the history of many of these items; their past owners range from the Chute family of The Vyne, the 11th Earl of Kent of Wrest Park and his son, the 1st Duke of Kent, the Earl of Ilay (3rd Duke of Argyll), through to modern times with the famous connoisseur, Samuel Messer, and the renowned watchmaker, George Daniels.

We will be exhibiting Highlights from the Part III catalogue from our usual stand at the rejuvenated Masterpiece London Art Fair 2022, and afterwards we will be opening our doors in Winchester on Saturday 9th July. Tickets for Masterpiece 2022 are available on request (please email: admin@cartermarsh.com).

‘There are three essential ingredients to starting a successful collection: Time, Inclination and Money – and I was lucky enough to have all three, but now I’m 85, I believe it’s time to share these wonderful objects with others.’ Dr John C Taylor OBE

Perhaps Sotheby’s and Christie’s could learn something from Carter Marsh & Co.”  Scott Reyburn, International New York Times
