An early English Chronometer by John Moncas Liverpool
A fine early English Chronometer. The unusual three tier mahogany box of good colour and patination, having early inset brass handles with simple diamond shaped bone escutcheon to the lower tier and brass push for the top with internal glass panel to view whilst the box is safely locked, having brass gymbal and bowl, with original ratchet winding key. The 4 inch silvered engraved brass dial having Roman numerals with Arabic five minute divisions, signed Moncas Liverpool and numbered 3227 within the subsidiary seconds ring, and complemented by a set of finely cut blued steel hands. The chain driven fusee movement with plain backplate with blued steel screws and steel work, having automatic fusee stop with double cut steel pawl to the polished steel set up click. The split bi-metalic balance with auxiliary compensation and brass regulation weights, having blued steel helical balance spring, with Earnshaw type spring detent.
A fine and highly original piece beautifully presented.
John Moncas is recorded by Britten and Mercer as working between 1818-1836 from 57 Castle and 14 Castle Street.
