Japanese Double Foliot Striking Lantern Clock.
A very fine Japanese, double foliot, striking wall mounted lantern clock. This lovely piece having double foliot with automatic change over at dusk via the countwheel strike, sounding the hours 9 to 4 respectively and having separate alarm train set through the dial and wound in the traditional way. The dial is under-cut brass or champleve with dark but translucent enamel, in-filled leaving the Japanese characters raised above. The wrap around doors depicting the mythical phoenix bird to the outside with raised pattern to the inner sections with well executed hinges and catches.
This clock survives in remarkably original condition given its date of circa 1790. All the wheel work is original as is the frame, door, plates etc. Apart from a few screws, this clock is as it would have been seen and used when first leaving its master clockmaker’s workshop.
